The 2011 place name boundaries were based on existing spatial layers of proclaimed suburb boundaries from municipalities, point and attribute data from the dwelling frame project, as well as other existing polygon-based place name layers from private entities or municipalities. In urban areas, names were mostly verified against the attributes from the erven cadastre. The place name spatial layers fit within the boundaries of the administrative boundaries used in South Africa as defined by the M</SPAN><SPAN>unicipal Demarcation Board.</SPAN></P><P STYLE="margin:0 0 0 0;"><SPAN /></P><P STYLE="margin:0 0 0 0;"><SPAN>Main places consist of a </SPAN><SPAN>main level of place name, i.e. main places (MP) that uses city-, town-, former ʺtownship-ʺ</SPAN><SPAN>and village names</SPAN><SPAN>.</SPAN><SPAN /><SPAN>In the case of farm areas, the local municipal name with the abbreviation NU (non-urban) was used. </SPAN></P><P STYLE="margin:0 0 0 0;"><SPAN>The place name database uses official names as far as possible, but includes alternative names (such as different languages and spelling variations), historic names and common names (unofficial names). </SPAN></P><P STYLE="margin:0 0 0 0;"><SPAN /></P><P STYLE="margin:0 0 0 0;"><SPAN>Publication Date: 1 July 2011</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
