Description: This data set was developed to show the location and extent of residential areas of informality(AoI)in the City of Cape Town.Each AoI is classified asone of the following types.Back yarder Settlement.Back yarder Settlement.Areas of Informality that started as backyarders on private property and has spilled over to City of Cape Town property (mostly POS, vacant Community facility sites or roadways or road reserves vested to the City of Cape Town).IDA/TRA/ ReblockedAreas of Informality that was developed with the aim of creating temporary or incremental opportunities by CCT, WCG or Other.Informal Settlement. It is an unplanned area of informality, where unauthorized housing structures is erected, and does not compliance with any exiting planning and building regulations.Rental Stock Settlements. Areas of Informality that is found on council rental stock properties.Small Farmers/ Rural Settlement. Areas of Informality that is characterised by well-spaced dwelling units that normally has some form of subsistence farming on it. Also conventional Areas of Informality that is situated outside the Urban edge.Unauthorised Informal Settlement.Any informal settlement established as a result of an active land invasion process. This area of informality is not yet administratively recognized by the Municipality as an informal settlement. This type of unauthorised settlements will not be immediately (if at all) be formalised and upgraded to a formal township in terms of the Municipality’s existing housing policies and programmes, due to the contravention of Bylaws and applicable Legislation. Only emergency relief services will be considered where appropriate. Due formal assessment processes must be followed i.e. the feasibility of their location, ownership, the availability of services etc. must be determined and duly budgeted for.Upgraded Settlement The government through legislative land use approval processes recognizes these settlements as part of the formal developed area. These settlements fall under normal municipal management processes to ensure that minimum standards are maintained during the planning and construction phases of the upgrading project. These settlements will have formal services and equitable road access, but the ownership may still reside with the Municipality, transfer of title may have not been completed yet.
