Description: The current update of the GPS18, provides insight into the ongoing indicator and information update process and focused on quantitative research on the economic and socio-economic potential and challenges in Municipalities in the Western Cape, excluding the City of Cape Town. The GPS18 did not thus far comprehensively update the qualitative data, as previously included in the GPS13. However, a concise, broad-brush overview of the qualitative aspects and strategic considerations on interventions that might be applicable to Municipal profiles, is included into this preliminary report. The overview is descriptive in nature of the economic base and place identify of the Municipality, to provide the userwith a basic understanding of the specific Municipal environment. The primary objective of the quantitative analysis component of theGrowth Potential Study 2013 (GPS13)was to determine the growth potential of settlements (outside the City of Cape Town) in terms of potential future economic, population and physical growth. The analysis of growth potential is based on two fundamental and related concepts: inherent preconditions for growth and innovation potential. Five thematic indices (themes) formed the basis for modelling the growth preconditions and innovation potential within each settlement and Municipality. This forms the basis for modelling and forecasting where in the Province economic growth is most likely to occur, and where specific investment and interventions are required. This report is a final draft for comment and peer review only. The process of finalisation and wider distribution will continue after the peer review period.
